William Barret Travis was either born on August 1st or August 9th in 1809, history records don’t agree. His parents Mark and Jemima, had eleven children and Travis was the oldest out of them.
Before he got married he studied law and became an attorney. Also he began a publication in the newspaper and became a Mason. When he got married to Rosanna Cato, he was only nineteen and soon the marriage failed. Then he abandoned his wife ,son, and his unborn daughter to go to Texas.
He arrived in Texas in early 1831. He set up to practice law and he joined the militia. He bought land from Stephen F Austin and learned to speak Spanish.
In June of 1835, Travis led twenty-five men to fight caption Antonio Tenorio in Anahuac. He captured Mexican soldiers easily. He was labeled as a trouble maker by many Texans.
Governor Henry Smith ordered Travis to get 100 men to go to San Antonio in January 1836. Travis only got 29 men and requested to be relieved. He stayed anyway and found to have 50 men soon. Bowie also arrived with 100 volunteers and they fought over who would be in command. Bowie got hurt and was ordered to stay in bed, so Travis took command. Travis prepared the Alamo for Santa Anna’s arrival. Travis had 183 men when they arrived. The Mexican’s overpowered the Texans within a few hours. Travis died early in the battle from a bullet that went into his head.
William Barret Travis is remembered and important in Texas History. His job was very important at the battle of the Alamo. Travis is a hero of Texas and American History.
